EXPLORING WHAT TRULY MATTERS.
Room for it all.

About.
Art is one way I explore what matters.
The art begins with almost anything.
A place, a person, a story, a feeling, a memory, a question or an everyday moment.
Sometimes I simply create to see what happens, because why not?
Exploring leaves the door open. It may lead somewhere new, somewhere familiar seen differently, or somewhere unexpected.
Along the way we may also discover something about ourselves and how we relate to the world.
Sometimes it seems to go nowhere and that's okay too.

"You'll find me somewhere between exploring the things that truly matter and the random things that don't, until they do."
EXPLORE THE ART.
When I create, I'm open to exploring different materials, subjects and ways of making. What matters can change from one day to the next. There's room for it all here.

Commissions.
Inspired by what matters to you.
Every commission begins with a conversation.
Tell me about the people, places, stories, memories or little details that matter to you.
From there, I will lead the creative process, exploring what you've shared and honouring it with an original work in response.

Forty Years of Nairn. This painting was commissioned to celebrate forty years of family holidays in Nairn, in the north of Scotland. In the creative process, we talked about the importance of returning to the same place as well as the memories made there, and the stories gathered along the way. After hearing what made Nairn meaningful to the client, I created the painting as a response to what was shared.

Artist.
I'm Douglas.
There is always a longer story. This is my attempt at the short version.
I'm an artist based in Glasgow, Scotland. My work begins with the things that catch my attention; the people, the places, the stories, the questions and the ordinary moments that aren't significant until we realise they are.
I love sketching from real life, exploring different ways of making, and spending time in nature, particularly the Scottish landscape. However, I don't like to be too far from a good coffee shop or pub!
At school, art was my strongest subject, so naturally I went to university to study French. I became a teacher and continued making alongside everything else. At that time, art brought balance to my life and gave me somewhere to explore, sometimes before I even knew what I was exploring.
In 2026, I started Sketch a daily drawing practice that has become a record of things I notice. Some things remain part of the record, some become the beginning of something more but they are all important.
I know art matters. I've experienced that in my own life and seen it in the lives of others. Exactly how it matters is something I will always explore. I don't think the answer is the same for everyone.
