I'm Douglas.
There is always a longer story. This is my attempt at the short version.

There have been moments in my life that made me question what I believed about myself. They made me curious about the stories we tell ourselves and what happens when we begin to question them. I'm an artist based in Glasgow, Scotland.
My work begins with the things that catch my attention; people, places, stories, questions and ordinary moments we might otherwise miss.

I love sketching from real life, exploring different ways of making, and spending time in nature, particularly the Scottish landscape. Although I don't like to be too far from a good coffee shop or pub!
At school, art was my strongest subject, so naturally I went to university to study French. I became a teacher and continued making alongside everything else. Art gave me somewhere to explore, sometimes before I even knew what I was exploring.
Sensitivity is one of the things I've questioned about myself. Sometimes being sensitive has felt difficult, and I don't want to pretend otherwise. But I know now it's not the whole story.
What else has sensitivity allowed me to notice?
I believe art can give our feelings somewhere to be felt. Sometimes a piece unlocks a feeling we didn't know was there. Sometimes we know exactly what it means to us.

Art definitely matters. I can make the work with feeling and I can tell you what it means to me. But what you notice and what you feel belong to you.
I still love hearing what other people think and feel about my work.
​
The story isn't finished. I don't think it ever will be.
